What is covered by travel insurance?
Insurance cover
Travel insurance covers the costs of an accident or sudden illness.
- health insurance when travelling
- travel disruption cover
- luggage insurance
- travel liability insurance
Health insurance when travelling
We will indemnify the costs of examination and treatment due to an accident or sudden illness during the trip. If you need medical transport (e.g. ambulance, rescue helicopter), we will also reimburse the costs.
If necessary, we will also reimburse the travel and accommodation costs of one companion.
Travel disruption coverage
If the trip is cancelled, we will reimburse the expenses incurred before the trip. If you are late to the starting point of the trip or do not follow your original timetable, we will reimburse justified expenses for continuing the trip or returning to Estonia for the reasons below. We also reimburse the costs of unused services, such as prepaid accommodation or concert tickets.
We will indemnify the expenses incurred if the trip is cancelled or interrupted for the following reasons:
- you or your immediate family member (or your only travel companion) suddenly fall(s) ill, get(s) into an accident, or die(s). For example, you fall ill before the start of a trip and therefore cannot go on the trip.
- You become a victim of a crime or your property is damaged. For example, while travelling, you will find out that an accident has occurred in your home and you need to return home.
- The vehicle is delayed due to a technical malfunction, traffic accident, or bad weather. For example, you will not arrive on time for the connecting flight, because the departure of the initial flight was delayed by several hours due to a blizzard.
If you need more extensive cover, choose additional travel disruption cover. This helps if your trip is cancelled or interrupted as a result of a natural disaster, a change of flight schedule or other unexpected event.
Luggage insurance
We will indemnify the theft, loss and damage of items carried during the trip, as well as the delay of luggage.
For example, when you get your suitcase back at the airport and you find that a corner of the suitcase is broken or the wheel has come off.
Travel liability insurance
We will indemnify any damage caused to a third party.
For example, when you are on a ski trip and you accidentally hit another skier going downhill whose equipment will be damaged and who will need medical attention after the collision.
Reimbursement of communication costs
We will indemnify reasonable and necessary communication costs incurred abroad due to an insured event.
For example, you need medical care in a foreign country and you call ERGO Travel Assistance, communicate with the hospital and notify the employer about going on sick leave.

- The airline changes the regular flight schedule after purchasing the tickets or the flight is overbooked. For example, you have bought your flight tickets several months in advance and the airline notifies you of the cancellation of your flight a month before your trip. The airline does offer a replacement flight, but it does not fit your travel plans and you need additional accommodation.

If you work in a foreign country as a builder, driver of a car or bus, forestry, agricultural or processing industry worker, domestic worker, babysitter, hotel attendant or do other work that requires physical effort, it is considered physical work.
Competitive sports cover

Good to know / FAQ
Travel disruption must be selected in the insurance contract, i.e. cancellation or interruption cover, because only then will the travel insurance be of help in situations like this.
In the case of travel disruption coverage, reimbursement depends on the reason for your return. For example, interruption of a trip is justified if: someone close to you suddenly falls ill or dies at home; something happens to the home itself and the owner needs to return immediately; the passenger injures himself or herself and it is not possible to continue the journey as originally planned. Simply wanting to return back home, such as due to rain at the destination or because you don’t like the travel companions, is not a sufficient reason for the insurance company to reimburse your costs of returning home.
If you have travel disruption coverage, the insurance helps to reimburse the part of a prepaid service which the customer cannot recover from the service provider. If the accommodation has been paid for in advance, you must first contact the accommodation establishment to cancel your reservation and find out whether they will refund the full amount or part of it.
Yes, it is possible to terminate the insurance contract before the start of the trip and the paid insurance premium will be returned to the client’s bank account.
First, we advise you to contact the travel company, to recover the money. The insurance provider will only reimburse the cost of the flight tickets, either partially or in full, if the airline does not issue a refund or provides only a partial refund.
If the plane departs from Riga (or another airport outside Estonia), you will still need some form of transportation to get to the airport. This means that for the passenger, the trip begins when they leave their home and head to the airport or port.
The amount of travel disruption should be chosen considering your needs and there is no specific recommendable amount for this. To find the most suitable amount of travel disruption for your trip, you should add up all the costs per passenger, made before the trip, such as the flight, museum tickets, accommodation, etc. Costs expected to be incurred during the trip, such as accommodation or tickets paid on- site, do not need to be considered, as they will not apply if the trip is cancelled.
When planning your trip, make sure to allow a reasonable amount of time, to transfer from one flight to another easily. You should follow the recommendations of the specific airline or airport on how much earlier you should be at the airport. You should allow for a reasonable amount of time when travelling with children and grandparents, as the gates of connecting flights in large airports may be very far from each other. Depending on the destination, passport control may take time as well. As a general rule of thumb, you should allow at least two (2) hours between two connecting flights in Europe, and at least three (3) hours outside Europe.
Travel insurance must be purchased before the start of the trip and for the entire trip, i.e. from the time you leave Estonia until the time you return back to Estonia. If it appears, while travelling, that the trip will last longer than initially planned, it is possible to change the end date of the policy. However, the insurance company must be informed of this.
If you contract COVID-19 while travelling, we will reimburse up to EUR 50,000 in medical treatment expenses. In the event of a travel disruption, we will indemnify damage caused by falling ill with COVID-19 in the amount of up to EUR 2,000, but not more than the sum insured for the travel disruption coverage indicated in the policy.
We do not cover the costs caused by self-isolation and quarantine.
Insurance helps if there are additional costs due to a delayed flight. If the flight is delayed, the passenger has the right to claim compensation from the airline, more detailed instructions can be found here.
